Compliance is everyone’s responsibility

Compliance is everyone’s responsibility

By Paul Gardiner - Manager; Health, Safety & Environment - Pacific Fuel Haul Ltd

What is compliance and where does it sit in your life you may well ask? The definition of compliance is:

Compliance (noun): the act of obeying an order, rule or request (Cambridge Dictionary)

Compliance sits deep inside the SAFETY camp at home as much as it does at work!

For example, ask yourself, would you knowingly put your loved ones at risk by driving your car with tyre tread outside of the WOF requirements? Or place your child in a non-approved child-seat restraint? Would you speed to get your child or yourself to the game before the start whistle blows or even knowingly driving your vehicle without a licence?

Health & Safety is all about compliance and by being compliant you are looking after the safety of everyone around you as well as yourself. Checking that your vehicle is fit for purpose and safe to be driven on the road is a good start to your day. Having all the training required to operate the vehicle along with all the tools to complete the job safely and without incident is also very important.

Compliance in attending safety meetings and completing your coaching modules is as much your responsibility as it is PFH’s. PFH has a duty of care for its Employees to ensure they have had adequate training. And the Employees have a responsibility to the company by bringing any inadequacies to the attention of their manager. If you have noticed something wrong with your vehicle or equipment, missed a meeting or not completed your monthly training module - then your responsibility is to make your manager aware of this.

PFH has ZERO HARM as its goal and this requires everyone buying into it and being committed to removing themselves from harm’s way. We all go about doing our work in a “get the job done” approach and sometimes overlook conditions that exist day in and day out which have been ‘managed’ rather than removed to avoid being harmed. Your compliance with the processes aimed at achieving this ZERO HARM goal is demonstrated every time you report a safety issue, and it shows you have taken your responsibility seriously.

So at home or at work, taking responsibility to comply with safety rules, regulations, and procedures will mean you are keeping yourself, your family, and others out of harm’s way.

At the end of the day it’s a pretty simple approach to achieve healthy results!
