I love the freedom - just you and road

The wife of Seaview terminal driver Phil Unsworth also loves the freedom when he’s out on the road. Now that their children have all left home – she has the freedom of having the house to herself!

Of Taranaki iwi descent, Phil was born and bred in Porirua, and gained his passion for trucks when he worked for Todd Motors assembling trucks after he first left school.

Phil started driving commercially from age 19 and was a courier driver for 10 years.

His experience in the logistics industry spans more than 20 years having also worked for Air NZ for 10 years.

“I was attracted to fuel tanker driving by friends about six years ago – and joined PFH 18 months ago,” says Phil. “I just love the freedom of being on the open road. It’s a fantastic job - the only real stress is the other drivers on the road!”

The Seaview terminal looks after a territory ranging right across the Central and Lower North Island from Wellington up to New Plymouth and right over to Napier.

“Pacific Fuel Haul is a different company to work for – I like that its management are fairly new with bright and new ideas,” explains Phil. “Wanting to do better and work as a team, the management are always willing to listen, help and put things into action.”

Phil’s life interests outside of work are “like chalk and cheese” – he’s a keen cyclist. His pride and joy is a Cannondale road bike once owned by Brian Fowler – an Kiwi cyclist Olympian and former Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

Phil doesn’t always ride for his own health - he is also part of a USO bike ride – a charity organisation working to promote men’s health. Go Phil!
